Plasmids play a crucial role in bacterial evolution and are often carriers of antibiotic resistance or virulence genes, being responsible for their transmission via horizontal gene transfer. To assess the potential of plasmid transfer, the gene content, in particular the number and identity of plasmid transfer genes (Tra, Trb and Vir gene families) should be evaluated, for which there is no standard tool and which often can not be identified with general genome annotation tools.
